A double from Cristiano Ronaldo secured an important Champions League point for Manchester United against Atalanta to ensure they remain top of Group F.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were second best throughout the majority of the contest, but an injury-time volley from Ronaldo meant it ended all square at 2-2 in Bergamo.

The Red Devils almost got off to the perfect start just four minutes into the game, with Scott McTominay’s effort taking a hefty deflection off an Atalanta body before hitting the post.

But it was the Italian side that took the lead – just as they did two weeks ago at Old Trafford – as Slovenian forward Josip Ilicic’s left-footed strike squirmed underneath the body of David De Gea following good work on the left by Duvan Zapata.

Despite a lacklustre first half from Manchester United, talisman Ronaldo, who scored the winner in the return fixture, drew his side level on the stroke of half-time following an incisive move involving Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood.

Atalanta once again took the lead after the break, as the lively Zapata sprang the offside trap and galloped beyond a sliding challenge from Harry Maguire before slotting home in the 57th minute.

With the away side looking set for a second Champions League away defeat of the season, Ronaldo’s sweetly struck volley rescued a point for his side in injury time.

The result now means Manchester United can secure their passage through to the next round of the competition with a victory away at Villarreal in three weeks’ time.
